Tongues In My Head

“An album inspired by mystery of ritual, sacrifice and ceremony and expressing the inner turmoil”

All the songs were recorded with her engineer live in one room in Hogan’s Studio Blue, and written, performed, mixed and produced by Annie on an array of her own instruments and all in house. Only Safe Hands is co-written, Karl O’Connor providing the lyrics.

“The whole LP came together about as organically as anything I have ever done in my life. More so. I lived it over four months in Spring and Summer, only sharing the studio with my sound engineer. We developed recording techniques to suit in situ and I was always working with a great headphone mix, experimenting was key. I felt possessed with superpower, spellbound!” – Annie Hogan

“A career defining masterpiece” – Regis – Downwards Records

“A strange, fever dream soundscape” – Paul Browne (Blitzed)

“The album is wonderful. Pop songs!” – Neil Mason (Moonbuildings, formerly Electronic Sound, NME, Melody Maker, Muzik)

“Annie is brilliant, she’s one of the few people I’ve worked with whose persona so comes out in what she plays. It’s so beautifully fragile in such a way that you cannot fail to notice it. And there were so many things she did that were just like, “Wow”, and that sensitivity and the real struggle that she had was a perfect marriage with Marc’s music, and as another musical voice, she was just as strong. I love that woman.” – Flood (Engineer Marc and the Mambas speaking in Wesley Doyle’s book Conform to Deform)

“An uncanny blend of Jazz Noir with Blue Velvet, pop TONGUES IN MY HEAD sees the return of Annie Hogan as a bewitchingly enigmatic chanteuse. As if woven from smoke and shadows, these songs unfurl in gossamer layers: piano, organs, glockenspiel, vintage keyboards, dulcimer and poltergeist percussion all perfectly orchestrated to vocals both intimate and uncanny. This aural spellbook is perfect for long, wintery nights of firelight and candles, if you’ll only invite her over your threshold” – Cathi Unsworth (Season Of The Witch -The Book Of Goth)

“I really, REALLY love it. Makes time stand still, incredibly powerful. The backings are so rich and intricate. It’s the best thing I’ve heard all year.” – Kris Needs (Author and rock journalist Record Collector, Classic Rock, Mojo..)

“Annie Hogan’s musical quest has yielded many gems over the past 40 years, including collaborations with fellow travellers such as Marc Almond, Gavin Friday, Lydia Lunch, Barry Adamson and Nick Cave. But the strange, otherworldly and always intriguing Tongues In My Head must surely rank among her best.” – Duncan Seaman (Yorkshire Post)

“Album of the year, artist of the year, this is the album we have all been waiting for” – Mark Farmer (Downwards European Archive)

“Annie Hogan works that piano in a way that is all encompassing, creating a full landscape of sound and music which is always powerful and allows the listener to dream. It’s a rare talent and a real gift!” – Rhys Mwyn BBC Radio Cymru

“Album of the year!” – Liam Andrews (My Disco, Aicher, Eros)

“Annie Hogan is amazingly prolific, she’s a great pianist, great musician, she writes as well and she’s an arranger, I strongly recommend you check her out, her stuff is amazing” – Martyn Ware (Human League, Heaven 17 – Electronically Yours Podcast)

“From flat sharing with Soft Cell during their Leeds university days to djing at London’s legendary Batcave and collaborating with the great and good of art rock and electropop, Annie Hogan has been on one heck of a ride from the sleazy underground clubs of Leeds to the top of the charts and beyond, she has plotted a rich artistic journey.” – Stephen Dalton (Electronic Sound)
